(Mustang Stadium)—Senior Captain Till Konczak scored on a penalty kick five minutes into overtime to defeat White Bear Lake 2-1 on Senior Night.
“All our seniors stepped up tonight and played big,” commented Head Coach Scanlon. “It was great to see the strong determination of the boys paid off with a win.”
The Mustangs and the Bears fought to a 0-0 draw at halftime in a mostly defensive battle. The Bears got on the board first with a goal at the 11 minute mark in the second half. Senior Elijah Paulin forced a turnover on a strong effort and slammed the ball away for a 1-1 tie.
The Mustangs were not content with a draw on Senior Night. The green and white played hard creating opportunities and many near misses. White Bear Lake had a big opportunity with a free kick from 20 yards out with 33 seconds remaining sending the shot high forcing an overtime period.
In overtime, the Mustangs kept up the pressure and the Bears were called with a hand ball on a failed clear. Konczak coolly fired the PK past the White Bear Lake goalie for the one goal edge. The Mustangs held possession for most the overtime period. Senior Goalkeeper Jason Min stopped eight White Bear Lake shots for the victory.
The Mustangs are now 2 wins, 3 losses in Suburban East Conference play. The defending State Champion Stillwater is next up at home on Thursday evening for an early 5p start.
