Top Ranked Wayzata defeats Mustangs 4-1 in State Tournament
(Saint Cloud, MN) The District 5AA champion Mounds View Mustangs were defeated by top ranked Wayzata 4 to 1 in the state tournament quarterfinals. The Mustangs held the Wayzata Trojans to a tight one goal game until late in the second half.

The first half was highlighted by senior Jason Min’s strong goaltending. Min made several clutch saves to keep the Mustangs close in the contest. Wayzata scored at the ten minute mark in a battle in front of the goal to take a 1-0 lead at the half.

Wayzata all-state forward Patrick Weah scored at the 44 minute mark to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead. The Mustangs striker Elijah Paulin struck right back within thirty seconds to make the contest 2-1. Paulin won a fierce battle for the ball with a defender and maneuvered around the Wayzata goalkeeper for the goal. The Mustangs applied strong pressure on the Trojans throughout the second half.

Wayzata’s Erik Williams scored back to back goals late in the second half to give Wayzata a 4-1 victory at Huskie Stadium at Saint Cloud State University. Wayzata (18-0-2) will play Maple Grove next Monday at U.S. Bank Stadium in the semifinals.

The Mustangs won their second consecutive District 5AA championship and their 15th trip to the state tournament. Senior midfielder Till Konczak was named to the all-state team. The Mustangs are coached by Chris Scanlon.
